Desserts and Beer in Hanoi /

We joined a local foodie tour in Hanoi.  Our tour guide, Kevin, is a fabulous person, very optimistic, customer-oriented and funny. The plan was to take us to 9 places for snacks. But he received a call from his boss that he could take us to 11 places. Magnificent!

Our first destination was spring roll which I showed in another post. One of the best visits is ice cream, cool and nice! The ice cream shop is located at the rim of the Hoan Kiem Lake near the Old Quarter. Opposite to the shop is the beige colour BaoViet Building. We ordered green sticky rice (cốm) and coconut milk ice cream. Both were very good and not too sweet. If you like new trial, then go for the green sticky rice for its unique flavour.

After tasting some awesome local snacks, Kevin took us to an outstanding dessert place at the Old Quarter, Chè Dung 95 Hàng Bạc (shop name and address). Coconut ice cream and yogurt with fruits were chosen at the first visit. Very refreshing and nice.  The sweetness was just right. After our Halong Bay cruise, we returned to the dessert shop. We picked coconut ice cream with green sticky rice (cốm) and mango with green sticky rice. Both were good. But coconut ice cream was a better pair with the green sticky rice. Ahh, you may wonder about the green sticky rice. At time of famine, hungry farmers roasted unripe grains of rice in a clay jar and smashed it to remove the husk. It became a delicious dish and widespread in the country.

Another kind of sweet stuff is not dessert but dried fruits. We visited Thanh Giang after 7pm. The many different vibrant colours brightened the environment. We could try six different types of dried fruit. They were nice. The genuine flavour was retained.

Food always comes with drinks. The most popular is certainly beer. Come to Bia Hoi Corner. The draft beer costs only VND5,000.  It is cheap. But more important is the atmosphere. Nearby are backpacker hostels. The place is filled with young people: noisy, fun, laughter.

Not far away is the beer (pub) street. We were told that the many tables and chairs outside the shops/restaurants were not legal. Guests can be fined by police. But the owners avoid it by bribery. So, drinks and hooray. Never end, not until the dawn is coming.

Kevin, thank you very much for a great night!

Kevin,
