Mudec Museo delle culture
Mudec is built on the site of the old Ansaldo factory in the Tortona area of Milan. It is a
meeting place for cultures and communities. Mudec is dedicated to interdisciplinary research on the cultures of the world. It focuses on the relationship of these cultures with the city of Milan.
I was very impressed with the design at the entrance. The sides of the staircase were dark. It leads to the bright. Once ascending to the top, you will see light permeating through the numerous curvy windows. The whole space is united as one but also separated by openings taking through to the different sections / exhibitions.
At time of our visit there was the exhibition of Homo sapiens. It is about the human evolution. It started with two hundred thousand years ago when the Homo sapiens moving from a small valley (now Ethiopia) to colonize the whole planet and lived with other human species. It led to the diversity of populations and cultures of nowadays.
We visited the permanent exhibition, free. It shows various heritage objects from different old cultures throughout the globe. Very old stuff from China, Japan, Peru, New Guinea, etc. were shown. Below shows some of my favourite from the entrance down to the end of the exhibition. Be quick to visit this part. It will be free up to end August 2017 only.
A lot of the exhibits are cute. A man drinking wine with special ornaments such as a big necklace and a strange hat with an animal head. Some of them look very modern. Quite a few number of the exhibits reflect the importance of fertility in the old world which human beings were fragile and threatened by disease and death. Survival and extension of life were essential.
Walking across the first floor we could see an exhibition of modern fashion but seems no longer available now. It is named Crafting the Future: Stories of Craftsmanship and Innovation. Eyes opened. All beautiful stuff! Though you may not dare to put them all on you.
