Shing Mun Reservoir 城門水塘
If you ask me what is the most memorable part of visiting Shing Mun Reservoir, I will definitely say monkeys. They are kings, pirates and robbers. And they are everywhere. Be careful, don't take any food with you. We saw a crew taking wedding photos with their car. A group of monkeys was making nuisance, sitting at the top of the car, staring the human beings and was close to war.
We descended to an area with tall trees and like a peninsula surrounded by water. Soon we were there we heard big screams. No need to tell but you can imagine what happened possibly. A few monkeys came to our area and blocked the way back to the main street. We enjoyed the silence and beauty there but had to wait a long time till they were calm down and left the area. It was about half an hour. Their patience was greater than ours.
There are other animals other than monkeys. Birds. They are not often seen but we heard them always. There we saw two golden ones resting on a big tree.
Near the water was a turtle. Looked curiously and moved slowly. Along the way, there were often people taking big cameras to shoot butterflies.
As I talk about fauna I should also mention flora around the reservoir. The surrounding of Shing Mun Reservoir is very green. Big trees everything and sometimes with blossoms. The most striking is the giant tree roots surviving stiffly. Plant with white leaves and strange form dotted the area.
Walking around is often under tree shade. A pleasant walk, although it can be demanding sometimes.
Though not walked under the sun, we were often sweating by going up and down. But it is rewarding with the beautiful green and superb views on the reservoir.
If you see the Pineapple Dam, it means you are close to the end of the walk. You can have a view of the Lion Rock.
Our walk took 3 hours including rest and waiting for monkey to go away. The net was around 2.5 hours. If you like to have a nice walk too, go to Tsuen Wan MTR and take minibus 82 at Shiu Wo Street. Wish you a nice trip!
At the end of the walk, the new friend of my hiking partner was waiting near the minibus station, looking at him sadly and saying farewell.
