Sheung Yiu Folk Museum to Highland Reservoir and Geopark 萬宜水庫 地質公園

Thanks to the social media! It ties up friends no matter where we are. It also brings strangers together who share similar interests, values, inspirations.  I like hiking. But most of my friends are either too busy or lazy. It's hard to find a hiking companion. Fortunately, there are numerous hiking groups at Facebook. I was brave to join a group of people who I never met to hike from the Sheung Yiu Folk Museum to the Highland Reservoir. Gorgeous scenery and amiable group mates.

We gathered in the early morning at Sai Kung Pier. Then we took a bus to the Museum. It shows old houses of the villagers. It's like going back to the past visualising the primitive and self-sustainable life.

The weather was so so at the beginning. But the sun showed up before we arrived at the western dam of the Highland Reservoir. It brightened our day with gorgeous scenery. The side shone by the sun show hills, emerald water, island, shorelines. All team mates shot this side. Big stones line up next to the dam to strengthen the protection against high water.

The other side in the shadow was also beautiful. Silhouette of hills over water clustered to form images like Chinese paintings.

After leaving the west dam, we walked on cement pavement / roads towards the east dam. It was built in the southeast of High Island, connecting it with the Sai Kung Peninsula near Po Pin Chau.

The East Dam is the only part of Hong Kong Global Geopark that’s reachable on foot. Making it even more special is it is the only place where you can touch the hexagonal rock columns. During the construction of the East Dam, the volcanic rock columns in the surrounding hills got exposed. The 140 million year old volcanic remains attract thousands of visitors to the area.

We arrived high up and had a nice panoramic view of the East Dam and surroundings.  Apart from the impressive dam, gigantic T/H-shaped dolosse blocks are also great attractions. They create a chaotic yet beautiful barrier to protect the dam against the rough sea.

Follow a cement pavement, we reached a wooden boardwalk. At the end of it is a mysterious cave  where you can enjoy an unobstructed view of a sea cave formation off East Dam.
