Luk Keng 鹿頸

It was the last day that Roland was in town. We still took the chance to be close to the nature and exercise our muscles.  Luk Keng 鹿頸 to Kuk Po 谷埔 is a flat path yet offers great views of the sea, villages, green and part of China.  The walk is about 6 to 7 kilometres.   It doesn't take long, the walk is easy and the scenery is beautiful.

We had dim sum at Dim Dim Sum in Shatin then proceeded to Fanling Railway Station.  Through Exit C we reached the mini bus station.  It was already around 1 pm. Not many people were there at time. We were at the beginning of the queue.  But mini bus (56K, 6.30 - 19.30) was sparse. It took about 20 minutes to be there.

Once you are there, follow the Bride's Pool Road and you will see a green building on the left. Nearby is a small path.  A signage points to Kai Kuk Shue Ha 雞谷樹下. Follow it.

You will soon pass a house with a sign of fierce dog inside. Yes, it is the right path.  Go further, you will soon find yourself in a totally green environment, a bit humid but your eyes will be pleased.

I said a flat path.  It is, but a little exception, steps up and down. And it is the only challenge of the walk. But you will get it through.   Once you have walked out the green, sea views awaiting.   Cranes! We saw a few, on rocks, around the mangrove of the lonely island.   Along the coast are numerous mangroves. Quite abandoned!
 

I mentioned part of China at the beginning of this article.  Don't believe me?  See the map next as a proof.  Opposite shore are Sha Tau Kok 沙頭角 and Shenzhen 深圳. It is well developed. But I prefer the nature.



 

Throughout you will see signage and distance of major viewpoints. There are a few old villages.   Be cautious of not going deep in the villages. Villages were subject to the government's re-development plan. Villagers were angry and blocked the way to the villages. There were notices telling you. Nevertheless, you can shoot some zoomed photos to grasps views of the villages and they are historical.


Villagers leverage the local resources and tourism to enrich their living.  You will find oysters scatter the coast. And we saw a few villagers opening oysters.


Eateries dot the path.  You don't need to worry that you will be starved or thirsty.  And I heard that the food was good. Since we were full, we did not have the chance to prove what we heard.

 
 

We spent a few nice hours and enjoyed the walk.  Queue for the mini bus got longer and longer. Unfortunately mini-busses were infrequent.  We could get on when the third one arrived.  Along the return drive, we noticed that more mini-busses were along the way.  It's about 4.30 pm.  So, be aware of it or call a taxi to get you back to the town.

In the 5th morning we visited the temple of Jupita (Baptistery), Meštrović museum and hiked up to Mt Marjan.  The baptistery is for total immersion.  It is beautifully crafted.  Next to it is a statue of Saint John the Baptist.  Meštrović museum is detailed in another section.  Please refer to Day 5 Split - Ivan Mestrovic We started the climb of Mt. Marjan around midday.  The sun was high.  The ascend was quite steep.  But the view over the town was spendid.  The path was barren.  We hardly saw any people, perhaps one workman who was on duty.  There were some Romanesque churches along the way.  The first one looked bright white under the sun.  It's beautiful.   Continued on the white 'sandy' path, second and third churches came into view.  Hu hu, destination reached!  For a while the sky turned cloudy.  It did not rain, fortunately.  We went to a public swimming place to immerse into the water after the sweating walk.  Yeah yeah we did not know previously

Kbal Spean

Kbal Spean is a unique archaeological site situated 50km from the Siem Reap.   Religious stone cravings sit on the river banks and bed, 150m stretch of the Stung Kbal Spean River.     Kbal Spean is commonly known as the "Valley of a 1000 Lingas " or "The River of a Thousand Lingas". Lingas are phallic representations sacred to Brahmanism.   It is a symbol of fertility.   Hundreds of them are carved into the rock of the river.   Other carvings include gods such as Vishnu , Shiva , Brahma and animals. To appreciate the beautiful carvings in the nature, one has to climb a trek for around 30 minutes.   Exhausted but worthwhile. Reclining Vishnu is often the theme of carvings.   Others include Shiva and Uma mounted on the bull, Brahma on a lotus petal and still others which I can't figure out exactly. Hong Kong Heritage Museum - The Hakkas and Fishing Origin

15 June 2012 HK Heritage Museum - Hakka Women It has been more than 10 years that I haven't been to the Hong Kong Heritage Museum .  Today, a Picasso exhibition brought me back.  Hmm, a Spanish artist associating with the Chinese heritage.  It's a special event of the French May .  It drew a lot of people to the museum, though a bit remote.  People, family speaking different languages crowded at the venue.  Picasso 's paintings shown were across his different periods.  Many photos of him and friends were also shown. Hong Kong Heritage Museum is unique in providing the history of Hong Kong, featuring Hakka (Guest family) migration, as a fishing village, the traditional Cantonese opera as the integral parts of Hong Kong's heritage, history and culture.
